About
Theresa
Theresa grew
up in Dublin, Ireland, where her
father was a famous actor on
stage, radio, and in a few
movies. As a young lady, she
studied dress design at
Ireland's prestigious Grafton
Academy of Dress Design. Most
recently in Ireland, she worked
as regional director of a
co mmunity youth center (for
at-risk youths), when she met
her husband, Paul. Theresa has
three grown children and, back
in the west of Ireland, two
grandchildren.
Theresa has
long pursued a passion in
various arts and crafts. While
Paul was posted at the U.S.
Consulate in Naples, Italy,
Theresa worked as the “Community
Liaison Officer,” organizing
activities for the Americans and
Italians who worked at the
Consulate. Also in Naples,
Theresa studied the old artistic
tradition of the Neapolitan “presepe”
or Christmas manger scene, and
produced the beautiful example
of the presepe on display
in the Inn’s front parlor. (She
also made the elaborate doll’s
house on display in the Inn’s
living room.) In her spare
time, she also studied
Neapolitan cooking at the
classes she organized for
Consulate employees. Today, her
interest in the arts finds
expression in her determination
to open a painting and quilting
retreat in Granbury, TX here at
the Iron Horse Inn
Bed-and-Breakfast.
About
Paul
A native of
Abilene, TX, Paul dreamed of
“seeing the world” as a boy.
His big break came in 1987, when
he passed the Foreign Service
exam and became a “Foreign
Service Officer,” or American
diplomat, with the State
Department. He served in Peru,
Spain, Russia, Italy and, most
recently, Sudan. His most
rewarding assignments were as
the Human Rights Officer at the
U.S. Embassy in Moscow, and as
deputy director of the U.S.
Office of International
Religious Freedom in
Washington. He met his wife,
Theresa, while on vacation in
Ireland, seeking relief from the
Russian winter.
After 22
years of being bounced around
the world, Paul tired of this
rootless existence, and brought
his Irish bride back to Texas.
The couple found the Iron Horse
Inn Bed-and-Breakfast for sale
in Granbury, TX, and jumped at
the opportunity. They’ve
been operating this fine old
historic Bed and Breakfast since December 2008, and
have been delighted with the
wonderful people they’ve gotten
to know as their guests.
Paul is a
graduate of the University of
Texas at Austin. He has
also worked as a newspaper
journalist in Brownwood and in
Austin, and as a Peace Corps
volunteer in Costa Rica.
He’s father of two young ladies
now making their own way in the
world, and recently became a
grandfather!
